Research: Big drinkers raise prostate cancer risk

Heavy drinking drastically increases the risk of high-grade prostate cancer, according to new research.

The study, published this week in the journal Cancer, provides some of the first strong evidence about the effect of alcohol consumption on prostate cancer risk.

Previous studies showed obesity, smoking and diet were modifiable risk factors for prostate cancer.

More than 10,000 men took part in the study that found men who drank more than four drinks a day, more than five times a week doubled their risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Less heavy drinking was not associated with any increased risk of the disease.

The study also found the action of the anti-prostate cancer drug finasteride was blocked by drinking less than 50q of alcohol a day.
