Research: Soundwave therapy on prostate cancer

According to a British Study, men with prostate cancer could be treated with soundwave technology instead of surgery.

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, treated 172 men via high intensity focused ultrasound technology (HIFU). Nearly four in five of the men were discharged in an average of 5 hours and 92% of the 159 who were followed up a year later were found to be cancer free.

Authors of the study say that participants reported few side effects than with surgery or radiotherapy. Less than 1% had incontinence, none had any bowel problems, while 30-40% had impotence.

HIFU was as yet not a validated curative therapy option in comparison to radical prostatectomy surgery, external beam radiation or brachytherapy for localised prostate cancer.
