Public health: men avoiding prostate cancer tests (NSW)
The Hunter Area Health Service had the highest prostate cancer death rate in NSW but the second-lowest diagnosis rate, a NSW Central Cancer Registry report revealed this year, indicating men were not seeking tests for the disease until it was too late. Area cancer services director Dr Colum Smith said the number of cases diagnosed was 7% lower than the state average. "This shows that it's more than likely a case of men not going for screenings," he said. "There's no logical explanation apart from them being embarrassed or not looking after their health."
